Snack brand Kind is introducing Kind Kids, a range of chewy granola bars aimed specifically at children. The company is also rolling out Kind Protein bars, Dark Chocolate Pressed bars and several new flavors for its established product lines.
Among the trends seen at the recent Natural Products Expo West was a movement toward low FODMAP products, which could be catching attention with consumers, said Mintel's Jennifer Zegler. Other trends on display at the show were beverage shots with functional benefits and probiotic drinks and foods.
Suja is entering the milk aisle with the debut of its nut-free, plant-based beverage line that uses a pea milk base. "We like the dairy space, because one, it doesn't cannibalize as much from our existing produce space where our juices and kombuchas are...and retailers seem to really like it because they know we can bring the households we already have in produce to the dairy side," said CEO Jeff Church.

Greek feta cheese is a great fit for several probiotic strains, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the Institute of Technology of Agricultural Products. Functional feta cheese incorporating the L. plantarum strain T571 could tap into the rising consumer demand for healthy food products, said the scientists.
Arla Foods Ingredients has developed a skyr product that can be used in existing yogurt production lines and sold in the Chinese market. "Skyr has been a huge success in Scandinavia and elsewhere in the world and we believe it will also receive a warm welcome in China," said Aparecido Silveira, Arla Foods Ingredients' global marketing manager for dairy.
Australian startups including Food Rescue and Kooda are working to reduce the amount of food that ends up in landfills. Food Rescue collects unused food from Perth restaurants and distributes it to charities while Kooda gathers inedible scraps for composting.
In order to find space for an urban farm to grow produce for his Los Angeles restaurant, Kali, chef Kevin Meehan knocked on doors to solicit space in neighbors' front yards. He grows and collects kale, arugula and herbs in nearby yards for use at the restaurant.
Upwards of 90 apple growers flew to Washington, D.C., to meet with lawmakers and their staffers for the US Apple Association's Congressional Fly-In. The hottest topic on the agenda was a labor shortage that's costing growers billions and keeping them from expanding their crops, the association said.
