Unilever-owned ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has tapped Matthew McCarthy as its new CEO, along with plans to create new vegan and low-calorie frozen desserts while continuing the company's tradition of social activism. McCarthy replaces Jostein Solheim, who will move up to oversee Unilever's North American food businesses.
Nestle says its strength in coffees is part of its overall strategy for future growth, even as consumers' food and beverage needs are changing. Chief Strategy Officer Rui Barbas points to the company's leveraging of its Coffee-mate brand to develop a line of RTD coffee drinks as one of the ways it is forgoing old-fashioned thinking on heritage brands, and instead shifting the focus of well-known labels to stay relevant to today's shoppers.
Slingshot Coffee has unveiled two new flavors in its line of canned coffee sodas. The North Carolina-based company, which recently moved into a new 13,000-square-foot facility, said its black cherry cola and citrus vanilla cream soda flavors are sweetened with fruit juice and cane sugar and have 60 calories per serving.
Unilever has created a partnership with e-commerce company JD.com to expand the reach of its products, transporting them among warehouses in China so the goods are available in rural areas. JD.com operates more than 500 warehouses, 7,000 delivery stations and a delivery fleet that can reach nearly all of China's consumers with same- or next-day delivery, the company said.
Generation Z consumers already command or influence as much as $600 billion in spending power, a trend that's driving change at Tyson Foods, which is embracing a startup mentality to court the digital-savvy generation. "Smaller companies are driving much of the growth, and we have to think about the market landscape very differently and cast the net wider than ever," Tyson executive Jen Bentz said.
As shipping costs in the US climb due to a shortage of available trucks, some companies such as dairy producer Dean Foods are adjusting earnings projections, while Kraft Heinz, Coca-Cola and others are raising prices. Third-party hauling rates have risen 26% from a year ago, a new record high, Dean Foods CEO Ralph Scozzafava told investors this week.
Functional beverage firm New Age says it has achieved around 10% of a massive distribution expansion plan. Brent Willis, CEO of the Denver-based company, says it added more than 100,000 locations during the second quarter and plans to focus on its four core brands for growth, particularly as pre- and post-surgery aids in about 50 of the largest hospital systems in the US.
Mars Wrigley Confectionery will unveil glow-in-the-dark M&M's packs and Dove Promises Pumpkins in three varieties as part of this year's Halloween lineup. The company will also launch Skittles Sweet Heat fun-size packs.
Global cereal bar sales are expected to reach $15.3 million by 2023, according to Research and Markets. Frequent snacking and a move toward on-the-go eating are expected to help cereal bar sales grow at a 3.9% rate, compounded annually.
Kroger will launch online sales in China via a storefront on Alibaba Group's Tmall Global marketplace, the company said. The site, set to launch today, will begin with private-label products, including Kroger's organic Simple Truth brand, and dietary supplements.
